Synchronous chat session vs face-to-face classroom discussion

Definitely different!! I can not read a post and type without looking on my fingers, wish I could dictate then I could follow each chat and respond much quicker. Asynchronous chat like blog is  better FOR ME as I can read , think, respond  all in my own time.
I came so well prepared wanting to quote people without making myself guilty of plagiarism but it all went way to quickly. What  I leaned is you can not follow all chats because then you don't participate. You also miss important opinions and responses and when you go back to a persons' response so much happen in the mean while.
I know I need a mind change as I still prefer face to face when discussing topics that generate responses and feedback.I need to interact with content and people at the same time.  Time and practise is needed. I will get there.

The library

Had to go to the library for information. I was helped and discovered  a new world with millions of books (not all philosophy!!!) Don't have time to investigate all (life to short) but sure going to spend more time there. It is very easy to find what you want and assistance is available.

Assessment Experiences

My worst assessment experience was handing in a assignment where I have received no guidelines, rubric or clear instructions. The lecturer changed and we were hanging in the air. We had no idea how or for what marks would be allocated what the format it should be or what must really be in the assignment. I spend hours on research before attempting to start and changed it millions of times. Even the course guidelines was confusing.
I did not know if a missed the 'bus' or were on the right tract and time was running out. It turned out I was not even on the correct bus route and I failed!!!The first time in many years. No one heard my marks as I was too embarrassed. The second assignment turned out much better (I was on the correct route and on the right track , light at the end of the tunnel!!! At least there was hope.I learnt to be prepared, asked for help, get enough information, talk to others and share my viewpoint.

With the on line assessment I forgot the password. I could not start and my well worked out plan failed!! I went on line and ask for the password and  I got it with a swift and instant reply!!! Wow and thanks, I could start my task and complete it in time!!

Online Environment and assessing

One thing I learnt was that you have got to be prepared for either assessing or chatting on line as you have got to give immediate responses to what you read. You can also not waste time with chatting about things that is not relevant to the learning content you are dealing with right now. You need to be brief when given a comment as if you give long explanations you miss some important chats or comments from others and if you only read  you don't participate and give your viewpoint.

It is very good to be able to access study material at any time wherever you are.You can go back, download, check marks and look ahead to what you are going to do. Feedback is given very quickly.

In a school language teaches can really used it very often. Face book and chat rooms is easy accessible , just watch the use of proper language and not shortened words or abbreviations. It could   easily help learners with reading, writing and spelling problems as well as disabled learners. Research can be done easily if correct assistance is given and learners are guided. Designing presentations, posters, advertisements, notices etc. is  very easy and interesting.

Just remember PASSWORDS as this slows you down.
When implimented successfully it could be a teachers greatest assistant. A little hard work in the beginning assists you in your teaching.
